Modern Contact Lens and understanding what goes into making them

Another way of manufacturing a contact lens is by cutting on a lathe. The procedure involves cutting a large circle from a plastic sheet and then the blank is fastened to a steel button with the help of molten wax. The button when centered on a fast-spinning lathe, results into concave cuts in the blank. Next, a lapping machine holds the blank against a lapper. The opposite rotating motion of the lapping machine and the lapper helps polish the lens. The resultant lens is mounted on an arbor which is installed in a lathe and the operator then makes convex cuts in the lens. This side of the lens is then polished and the lapper fits into convex lens.

Finishing produces the final product that fits perfectly on the patient’s eyes.

What sets a good contact lens manufacturer apart?

•State-of-the-art technology: A good manufacturer will be equipped with modern technology and an optical laboratory fitted with state-of-the-art Contact Lens manufacturing equipment that produce cutting edge contact lens. Today some labs use 5-D tracers to shape products. With this technology, technicians can ensure better fitting of the lens.

•Experience: Labs that have been around for more time always have an edge of having more experience. It is also important for the labs to show sparks of innovation and have given highly researched results. A good manufacturer also keeps abreast of latest advancements in the field of contact lens processing and makes a conscious effort to stay ahead in their research.

Experienced manufacturers understand the requirements of patients with conditions like dry eyes, astigmatism, keratoconus, GPC, post-refractive surgery, and presbyopia.
